Lip Sync and Snow Day

An old tradition mashes up with a new one! We (pretended to) sing, we danced, we played giant Twister: two of the most beloved school traditions — Lip Sync (old) and Snow Day (new) — took place on February 12th.
Check out the Lip Sync and Snow Day photos and read more to learn about these “only at Crystal” events.

The most heated Spirit Week competition is the Lip Sync. This year’s Lip Sync Winners were the 7th grade for the Middle School and the 12th grade for the Upper School
Right after the Lip Sync, our 400+ students, faculty and staff left campus and took over the San Mateo Convention Center for a day off from school and a blizzard of fun for Crystal’s Annual Snow Day.

Students start speculating about Snow Day on the first day of school because when it will occur is a closely-held secret known to just a handful of administrators and staff. An East Coast transplant, Amy Richards initiated the tradition seven years ago. She feels strongly that--as with a true weather-related snow day--the Crystal version must be surprise. Rumors abound for months as students torture themselves and their teachers with various theories. In the end, everyone responds with unmitigated joy when the announcement is made. This year, Director of Facilities and Transportation John Seybert did the Snow Day fake out by announcing a “shelter in place” drill to the entire school at the end of the Lip Sync. He had everyone going until he mentioned that the drill was “due to an environmental situation,” which clued us all in and led to the entire auditorium erupting in cheers, “IT’S SNOW DAY!”
