In his morning talk, Richard Weissbourd, EdD discusses his book, The Parents We Mean to Be: How Well-Intentioned Adults Undermine Children’s Moral and Emotional Development. Dr. Weissbourd is a senior lecturer at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education and the Kennedy School of Government. Dr. Weissbourd also co-directs Harvard’s Making Caring Common Project, which helps educators and parents raise compassionate children committed to their communities and to social justice.

New York Times columnist Frank Bruni, author of Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be, is joined by Harvard lecturer Richard Weissbourd, EdD, lead author of the 2016 report on college admissions, “Turning the Tide,” for an in-depth conversation about the changing college admissions climate. They will address efforts to reshape the college process by prioritizing student community and ethical engagement, alongside academic and extracurricular achievement. Their talk will be moderated by Denise Pope, PhD, founder of Challenge Success.
Richard Weissbourd is a senior lecturer at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education and the Kennedy School of Government. He also co-directs Harvard’s Making Caring Common Project, which helps educators and parents raise compassionate children committed to their communities and to social justice.
In his book Where You Go is Not Who You’ll Be, Frank Bruni rejects the myth that the Ivy League is the only route to corner offices, governors’ mansions, and prestigious academic posts. Through research he shows what matters most are a student's efforts, in and out of the classroom, not the gleam of a diploma. Mr. Bruni is also the author of the bestselling books, Born Round and Ambling Into History.
Dr. Denise Pope is the author of Doing School: How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed-Out, Materialistic and Miseducated Students and the recently released Overloaded and Underprepared: Strategies for Stronger Schools and Healthy, Successful Kids which provides a concrete framework to reduce stress while engaging students in real learning. A Senior Lecturer at the Stanford University School of Education, Pope is a three-time recipient of the Outstanding Teacher and Mentor Award. She is co-founder of Challenge Success, a research and intervention project that aims to reduce pressure and champion a broader vision of success for children and adolescents.
