Celebrating the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Crystal community celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with events on both campuses led by student and faculty leaders of the Diversity Committee, Keep it Real Club, and the Multicultural Leadership Team. View photos here

The Middle School explored a variety of resources and artifacts about Dr. King to help them form "big questions" for more in-depth research.  Split into multi-grade level families, students created displays on topics such as "How did [MLK] find the bravery and courage to stand up for people of color" and "How did [MLK] start his non-violent revolution."  The displays turned Expansion Hall into a virtual museum with a walking tour of history for guests at the potluck dinner party for the entire CSUS community--the culminating event of our week-long commemoration of Dr. King.

In the Upper School, students and faculty members collaborated on an all-division assembly focused on helping us understanding the identities and experiences within our own community. Students made bracelets with colored beads that represented the races of people in their lives, such as their dentist or the author of the last book they read.  Students reflected on how their pieces were similar and different from each others.  We heard stories about how students have experienced "microaggressions" in their daily lives, which underscored how our ongoing dialogues and programs about equality and social justice further the legacy of Dr. King while creating a more inclusive, safe, and welcoming environment for all of our community members.
