After seeing great success as a club in the 2018-19 season, Squash has become an official Crystal sport. Though Squash is primarily seen on the east coast, Crystal looks to be at the forefront of a westward expansion. Leading the charge is Head Coach Charlie Johnson.
Johnson who serves as the Director of Squash at the Bay Club in Redwood City, couldn’t be more excited about the position. "I feel so incredibly lucky and very excited to start working with Crystal. The program will range from working with some of the best junior players in the country to giving opportunity to those who are picking up the racquet for the first time,” said Johnson. “I am honored to represent Crystal and bring serious squash to the west coast.”
Originally from the UK, Johnson has served as a US National Team coach since 2016 and serves as the West Coast Regional coach. While representing Crystal squash players around the country, he works with a European Champion and a top US Junior who plays at Princeton University. Don’t let the coaching fool you however, as a former professional, Johnson was ranked #132 in the world, and has been California Champion since 2013. “Much of what I achieved was because I was lucky enough to work with some of the best coaches out there,” said Johnson. “I now find myself with the opportunity to pass on my experience to the next generation.
“We are so incredibly excited to welcome Coach Johnson and squash to Crystal,” said Bobby Long. “His energy and passion for the sport is infectious and we can’t wait to get started. The opportunity to be the first true program on this coast brings a great sense of pride to our campus.”
Squash will start on November 4th at the Bay Club in Redwood City. The team looks to return to the National Championships in February. Last year, Crystal finished 9th place overall and were the only team representing the west coast.
Coaching with Johnson will be Lawrence Kuhn, fresh off a collegiate career at Rochester. Kuhn was a South African Junior Champion and an All-American in college. He graduated with degrees in Economics, Psychology and Business finance.
