6th grade Earth Day celebration collage: enjoying our home natural environments

Happy Earth Day from the Upper School Green Team!

This year is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. According to the Earth Day Website: “Over the decades, Earth Day Network has brought hundreds of millions of people into the environmental movement, creating opportunities...

...for civic engagement and volunteerism in 193 countries. Earth Day engages more than 1 billion people every year and has become a major stepping stone along the pathway of engagement around the protection of the planet. Today, Earth Day is widely recognized as the largest secular observance in the world, ... a day of action to change human behavior and create global, national, and local policy changes.”

The theme of Earth Day this year is “Climate Action.” In regards to the fight against climate change, this is the most pressing topic that needs to be discussed.

Apart from Earth Day, the secondary themes for today are also “Equity and the Environmental Movement” and “Personal Connections with Nature.”
  • Check out this brief history of environmental justice and its roots in racism and socioeconomic injustices. This inequity is acutely present even in our community--check out how water inequality hurts people just next door here.
  • We encourage you to get outside today and connect with nature - enjoy the beautiful spring weather!
  • If you’re feeling down about quarantine, this video shows the happy animals around the world who are getting a break from human activity. You can also take a look at the San Diego Zoo’s exhibit live stream, or the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s nest cams to watch baby birds.
  • For something more active, take the Earth Day Daily Challenge.
