The Track and Field team is now celebrating 11 years of competition, with a bit of a hiatus in the 80s and 90s. The team is once again the biggest on campus (48 students strong) and includes some of the top athletes in the WBAL. Following last year’s season with multiple league champions, the team will once again vie for several more individual and team league championships this year. Leading the way for the young Gryphons are seniors Sam Klotz, Alani Douglas, Elsa Valenzuela and track rookie Jake Kohn. The same group did an amazing job leading the cross country team in the fall and will be tremendous assets to the coaches.
The next group of tracksters include juniors Ryan Kaveh, Willy Hawkins, Anthony Shao, Vijay Masharani, Miles Wapman, Joel Kohn, John Stayner, Binh Phan, Shayaan Haq, Grace Stayner, Rachel Hutton and newcomers Kristen Chui, Sophie Murguia and Henry Fisher. This is definitely a diverse group that will contribute to the team in the sprints, middle distance, distance, jumps, throws and relays.
The sophomore crew is equally as impressive with Preston Lam, Cole Woodruff, Marcus Niksa, Collin Ching, Luca Schroeder, Caroline Callaghan, Katherine Huang, Bobbie Burgess, Katherine Ericson, Molly Johnson, Alexis Teter, Natasha Thornton-Clark and Morgan Walker. Thirteen is typically considered an unlucky number but those 13 sophomores will only be bad news for our competitors.
The largest and most promising group includes a quarter of the freshman class: Alberto Nissim, Ariana Kaveh, Hannah Travis, Hugo Pegley, Katie Chu, Lianne Blodgett, Nick Holterman, Sahana Shankar, Syeda Mohsin, Ayo Agunbiade, Kevin Alcala, Britney Biddle, Niki Lonberg, Javier Rojas, Hannah Williams and Rose Gold. Potentially, this could be the most talented class of runners in our school's history. It will be very exciting to see what they will accomplish during the next four years.
We have already had a few competitions and several of the above athletes have brought home hardware and t-Shirts. The record board is also under assault as Preston Lam broke his own record in the 3000 meters and Willy Hawkins, Jake Kohn, Hugo Pegley and Alani Douglas all broke into the all-time top 10 list in the 800m, 1600m and 3200m.
Look for more season highlights in the next newsletter. Until then, we will keep working hard, improving each day and wear our school uniforms proudly in competition. Coach Albert Caruana
