Power of Memory: History in Action

The fundamental concepts in the Upper School Power of Memory (PoM) elective are why we preserve history, how we preserve it, and what history we choose to preserve. The class is not just a theoretical exercise.  As part of a culminating project, history teacher Kent Holubar asks students... “work with an organization that promotes taking care of the past — to contribute in the ‘battle against forgottenness.’”  For example, students have served as docents at historical societies, created digital archives for newspapers, and recorded oral histories for affinity groups. In the end, students create three-minute promotional videos about their organizations and the work they have done in support. Their stories are compelling — check some of them out here.
