6th grade Scientists Showcase Research
Sixth grade scientists stepped into the shoes of a biologist, geologist, hydrologist or atmospheric scientist and used models to communicate expert information to their peers. Their goal is to construct a collective understanding of how the parts of Earth function as a system.
Under the direction of science teacher Elise DeBuysser, the Earth Science project has been ongoing for the past three weeks. There are three phases: (1) learning to research with science journal databases, (2) constructing a 3D model with a special focus on upcycled materials, and (3) making connections through the showcase of projects and discussion.
The showcase was structured as an each-one-teach-one gallery walk (half the class will guide viewers through their project, the other half interacting with the projects and notetaking).
The goal is for students to step into the shoes of a particular type of scientist, use models to communicate expert information with their peers, and construct a collective understanding of how the parts of Earth function as a system. The project will culminate with visits to Water Dog Lake Park to observe the four "spheres" of Earth and identify interactions. View photos
