From Design to Model: Building Bridges

Students in the Physics, Engineering, and Technology (PET) class were tasked with designing and building seismically safe bridges for their Bridge Project. Students began the design stage using a Computer Aided Design (CAD).
Working in pairs, the students decided on a design and then, using the CAD program, constructed a virtual bridge. The program is designed to teach students the engineering principles needed to design and build a bridge. Once the design was completed, students working in pairs, built a scale model of their bridge. Each bridge had to undergo earthquake stress tests to measure the integrity of the design. In addition to gaining an understanding of the engineering principles of bridge construction, students learn very important shop skills and safety procedures they will need for future projects.
