PIE, a joint initiative of Crystal’s Parent Association and Administration, continues to explore the impact of anxiety on our students and families. Building on Dr. Patel's experiences of anxiety as faced in the college population, we will discuss areas of prevention we can begin to implement in the school-age years. In conversation with Julie Lythcott-Haims, we will explore the impacts of generational histories and family functioning on mental health, as well as investigate the power of narratives to approach current and future dilemmas.

Sujata Patel, M.D. is a staff psychiatrist at Vaden Health Center, where she provides care to Stanford students. Her areas of interest include the transition to college and working with parents of college students.

Julie Lythcott-Haims notes about herself: "I root for humans. Humans need agency in order to make their way forward; I am deeply interested in what impedes us. I am the New York Times bestselling author of How to Raise an Adult, an anti-helicopter parenting manifesto which gave rise to one of the top TED Talks of 2016, and now has over 3.5 million views. My second book is the critically-acclaimed and award-winning prose poetry memoir Real American, which illustrates my experience with racism and my journey toward self-acceptance. A third book on how to be an adult, for young adults, is forthcoming. I am a former corporate lawyer and Stanford dean, and I hold a BA from Stanford, a JD from Harvard, and an MFA in Writing from California College of the Arts. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area with my partner of over thirty years, our two teenagers, and my mother."
