College Counseling

What I appreciate most is the CCO’s ability to make me feel in control during this process… They listen to my needs and adjust accordingly. I know that with their help I can tackle the process successfully. CSUS alum

College Counseling Office (CCO)

The College Counseling Office includes the Director of College Counseling, Jennifer Carleton, Associate Director of College Counseling Jean Lee, and Registrar Jeannie Fischer.  They work closely with students and their parents throughout the college search process. The college counselors' primary focus is with the 12th and 11th grades and their parents. The CCO has periodic meetings with the 9th and 10th grade (and their parents) throughout the year. They are also available to answer questions via phone and email.

The College Counseling Office keeps its information current by meeting with the over 100 college representatives who visit campus each fall, attending national conferences, visiting college campuses, and outreach to admission offices.

College Quest: During the first semester, the college counselors meet in class once a week with all seniors to review the steps necessary in applying to college:  standardized testing, applications, personal statements, recommendations, and distribution of all the forms to the appropriate people. Students are kept up to date on the latest information from colleges and college representative visits. College Quest is a supplement to individual student meetings which take place throughout the senior year.

  • College Counseling Mission Statement

The CSUS College Counseling office provides expertise, experience, and enthusiasm to support each student in developing a targeted set of collegiate options that fit the student's interests and at which s/he will thrive intellectually and personally. We help students in preparing applications that present their life story in an authentic manner. Through this guidance, we empower students to own their collegiate choice as the independent, adult decision that it is. The college application process is an opportunity for self-reflection, self-discovery and personal growth; in this regard, the decision of what college to attend is the beginning of a journey, not the end.
