An independent day school for grades 6-12

Seeking Growth Challenges Through Language

All 8th graders participate in a week-long study trip with a language focus. Students studying French go to Quebec, those studying Spanish visit Nicaragua, and students studying Mandarin travel to Taiwan. In addition to language immersion, 8th graders may engage in service projects and cultural art activities, participate in historical inquiries, and make friends with locals.

Spanish Language Study Trip
Spanish students in the 8th grade have the opportunity to help build schools while enhancing their language skills. CSUS has partnered with Seeds of Learning (SOL) to enable 8th grade students to help with a classroom-building project in a rural community in Nicaragua. Daily service activities can be interrupted by impromptu baseball games with local children, tortilla-making in the homes of local families, a trip to the historical city of Granada, “flying” through towering trees on a zip-line, chocolate making and tasting, and more. Students return home not only with stronger language skills, but also with a deeper understanding of their role as global citizens.

French Language Study Trip
If you are a CSUS 8th grade French student, you are in luck! For one week in early March, you will have a chance to travel to Quebec, speak French and immerse yourself in French Canadian culture. In addition, students will take a Ghost Walking tour of this historical city, participate in a cirque workshop to learn unicycling and juggling, visit a traditional Huron-Wendat Village, dogsled and snowshoe in the heart of a Canadian forest, and zip-line in the astonishing Ste. Anne Canyon.

Chinese Language Study Trip
8th graders studying Mandarin will not only be able to greet new friends with “Ni Hao” when they embark on their language immersion trip to Taiwan. They will also have a chance to taste durian ice cream, go on historical walking tours, mix with locals in night markets, experience whitewater rafting in Taroko Natonal Park, home stay with local students, shoot arrows with tribal groups, design a personal jade necklace, and more… all while speaking Mandarin and immersing themselves in the Taiwanese culture.
