Global Speaker Series: "Stories from Afar"

On a recent evening, ten Upper School students shared their Semester Away and International Internship experiences with the CSUS community. More than riding elephants, climbing majestic mountains...
...and eating scorpions, the students offered first-hand accounts of their adventures.

Read some of the parent and student comments after the event:

Ashi (parent of 10th grader) "Stories from Afar night left me extremely excited about the internship opportunities available to Crystal students.... and after hearing about their adventures, I too would like to sign up for the program!  They didn't gloss over the difficulties of living and working in a foreign country, but it was clear that they had an incredible time and came away with some great stories...Thank you for organizing the event and moreover for these incredible life experience and travel opportunities that you've created for our kids."

Erin (parent of 8th grader)  "The presentations by the upper school students about their trips were extremely well done.  While you can learn more about the big picture from a trip website, the presentations gave a really good overview of the day to day life on the trip and why it was so meaningful to them."

Amy (a 9th grade student) "Such an eye-opening experience. It was fascinating to listen to a slew of outstanding students tell exciting accounts of summers or semesters abroad. It's not every day one has the opportunity to travel to a dream destination and still call it school. I can't wait for sophomore year!"

Joy (parent of a 9th grade student) "What an enchanted evening! I'm awestruck. These courageous and confident young adults make me realize how stale brick-and-mortar schools have become, how much a summer or a semester away in a land far from home can teach beyond any books. You meet the locals, live in their culture, and experience humanity, politics, conflict resolution, and environmental reservation--all first-hand. I wish I was 15 again."

The Global Speaker Series and the students' international opportunities were made possible through the school's office of Global Initiatives. For more information, please contact program director Bill Kwong.
