Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.

Activism was the theme of Crystal's annual celebration of MLK Day on January 12th.  In his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," Dr. King explained the moral responsibility to act against social injustice and readings from the piece provided a through line for the assembly.
Historical examples of civil disobedience and activism alternated with contemporary movements.  For example we learned about the Birmingham Bus Boycotts alongside the Standing Rock Protests, the Black Panther Movement alongside Black Lives Matter movement, and much more. We heard how art gives voice activism, particularly through Hip Hop, dance, spoken word poetry and song.  Student performances were a highlight.  As a follow up to the assembly, students took part in an "Activism Teach In," in which several faculty and students will held session on diverse topics including Aleppo and the Syrian War, Black Lives Matter and Mental Health as a Civil Rights Issue.
